Three 10-Minute Writing Drills That Improve NAPLAN Essays
Short, repeatable drills can improve sentence control, idea development and structure without turning writing practice into a marathon.
Students do not always need to write a full essay to improve. In fact, short drills often build the exact skills that show up in higher NAPLAN bands.
Drill 1: Upgrade the Opening
Give students a simple prompt and ask for three different opening sentences: one direct, one vivid, and one surprising. This builds audience awareness and flexibility.
Drill 2: Expand One Idea
Choose a basic reason or event and expand it into five sentences. The goal is to add explanation, consequence and detail instead of jumping to the next idea too quickly.
Drill 3: Sentence Rhythm Check
Ask students to rewrite a paragraph so no two sentences start the same way. This improves sentence structure and makes writing feel more mature.
